General Information
The United Kingdom is full of divergences; in whichever direction you travel you will find a wide variety of landscapes and cultures to explore. The United Kingdom encompasses Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) and Northern Ireland which are all unique countries with their own customs, cultures and traditions.
England, which is situated in the southeast part of the British Isles, is separated from Scotland by the Cheviot Hills. To the west along the border of Wales are the Cambrian Mountains, while a range of hills making up the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire, extends in the surrounds.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, with a queen and a parliament that has two houses: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The amalgamation between England and Wales came about in 1536 with an Act of Union. Another Act of Union in 1707, joined England and Scotland which permanently became Great Britain. The name, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was adopted in 1927.
The capital and largest city is London, which has an amazing diversity of nationalities. Other large cities are Glasgow, Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Leeds, Bristol, Manchester and Bradford.
