General Information

Blaenau Ffestiniog is located in the Gwynedd region of Wales, United Kingdom and was once the slate capital of northern Wales. Sitting among mountains that are peppered with quarries, Blaenau opened the Llechwedd Slate Caverns to visitors in the early 1970's, which helped the once declining industrial town to regain its popularity. Today the electric Miner's Tramway takes passengers on a tour through the original caverns.

Blaenau Ffestiniog's main income is tourism as tourists flock here to see the many attractions in and around the area. Although Blaenau is in the centre of the Snowdonia National Park, it is not included in its boundaries. There are many reservoirs here which supply the Ffestiniog Hydro Power Station with water. The views around Blaenau are breath-taking and inspire many an Artist. The landscape dotted with slate tips, mountains and greenery provides the inspiration.

The towns slate history is everywhere; in the stone houses with slate roofs, the steps through the town are slate, and even the products in the shop are slate. Something really unique.

The narrow-gauge Ffestiniog Railway links Blaenau Ffestiniog to nearby Porthmadog on the coast. To experience the ride is remarkable with the twists and turns along the countryside coupled with the amazing views.
