Shetland
General Information
Shetland is located in the Highland region of Scotland, United Kingdom and consists of an archipelago of more than 100 islands which lie around 100 miles north of the Scottish mainland. Shetland offers a unique blend of Scandinavian and Scottish culture, diverse landscapes, incredible geology, fascinating wildlife, world-renowned archaeology and many fantastic events and festivals. This area has world-renowned archaeology, a fascinating wildlife and along with beautiful gardens.
Despite its remote location Shetland is well connected through it’s daily passenger and freight ferry sailings to and from Aberdeen, and regular air links to mainland Scotland.
Shetland is made up of 15 inhabited islands accessible by road, inter-island ferries and bridges – a perfect location for an active family holiday. “The Mainland” is the largest of the Shetland Islands, with nine smaller inhabited islands around the shores. These islands are Unst, Yell, Fetlar, Skerries, Whalsay, Bressay, Fair Isle, Foula and Papa Stour.
With a history going as far back as 6,000 years there are is so much to do and see to bring this past to life. Shetland offers an excellent choice of outdoor activities to annual festivals, there is something for everyone.
Shetland's culture stems from a variety of roots, and being closer to Norway than the UK, the Scandinavian culture is very strong. No matter which island one visits there is something for everyone.
The flora and fauna is abundant on the islands, along with the Shetland Pony and Shetland Sheepdog hailing from here. The windswept landscape is home to many beautiful and well maintained gardens that are unique to the islands.
Getting around the islands is easy with public transport and ferry's. Shetland and Islands are well worth a visit for the whole family.
